LibriVox

Public domain books (i.e. books with expired copyrights) and recorded by volunteers as .mp3's and ogg vorbis files and posted in LibriVox's catalogue. They have books, short stories, poems and some non-fiction works. There are a few books in other languages, but not many. Volunteers generally record a chapter or more of a book in collaboration with other recorders. The recordings are then released
together when the book is finished. There are some works recorded entirely by one person.

I listened to Pride & Prejudice this past week, and it was great. The fact that there were different readers for many of the chapters made some things confusing-for example, Maria was pronouned "muh-REE-uh" by some readers and "muh-RYE-uh" by others. But, it was only slightly distracting.

I'm going to be recording chapters 20-22 of Mansfield Park by Austen in the next few weeks. The volunteer in charge of organizing the book did suggest a uniform way to pronounce Maria for this book.
