An Eye...

...looking right at me.
I was sitting outside being a scarecrow/blackbird enjoying the afternoon coolness in the sun. The birds were hollering angrily at each other because they couldn't pick at my seedlings.

The chickens were safely cooped up running back and forth in their arc asking to be let out. They used to scare the birds away for me, but they discovered it was more productive to follow where the blackbirds were eating. Silly things are in cahoots.

A small cracking sound near my head startled me, so I turned to look at the blackbird I expected to see on a nearby branch. But, it was a hawk. A healthy looking hawk looking right at me. It was crouched in preparation for flight.

When I blinked, it jumped off the branch and flew up into the neighbors tree. It had to come towards me to turn around and fly off, and I kind of twisted out of my chair for the door. I was nearly running on my knees as I tried to stay low to the ground.

I could feel the puff of air from it's wings. The chickens are staying in the coop. I see him flying around the neighborhood sometimes. I bet he makes a nice living off small rodents. I'd never seen him quite this close before though...
